Home Studio Microphones

USB Direct to Computer

These microphones are all USB devices that can be connected directly to your computer. No additional audio interface is needed.

Condenser microphones like the popular Blue Yeti provide the fullest sound quality. However, their high sensitivity to sound also means that they will pick up more background noise. This makes them not the most ideal when others are in the room talking or there are other sounds near or around the room.

Dynamic microphones are less sensitive and require to be spoken into much more closely. This also means that they are ideal for rooms with background noise or others speaking in the same room. When there are multiple podcast hosts, for example, dynamic mics are the best choice.

Microphones

With the Shure SM7B on the high end, and the Samson on the low, the Rode PodMic is our favorite “Best of Both Worlds.” Because of that, it is often out of stock. In our opinion it is the best value of all of these dynamic microphones.

These dynamic microphones connect via an XLR connection into a device called a pre-amp. As the name implies, it is an amplifier that increases the microphones level before sending it to your computer. Below are our favorite pre-amps for this job.
